Germany vs Austria
Germany are leading Group C with a five point advantage
ahead of Austria, Sweden and Ireland, could make a big step towards the
World Cup by beating Austria and winning at the Faeroe Islands
following Tuesday. Coach Joachim Löw has a high-class squad available,
but in the recent games a serious problem in his defence appeared.
Germany scored 15 goals in the last four games, but though they have a
world-class keeper in Manuel Neuer, they conceded nine goals in this
four games, three in the last friendly against Paraguay that finished
3:3 at home. Therefore Löw will probably play with Jerome Boateng as
central defender instead of Mertesacker. In defensive midfield
Schweinsteiger and Gündogan are injured, also Götze and Podolski can't
play.
Austria couldn't qualify for a World Cup
since 1998, but now they have a decent chance to at least make it to
the play-offs. For them the match against Ireland four days later is the
more important, as they are equal on points with Ireland and Sweden,
but they won't come to Germany just to lose. They actually had looked
very well in the qualifier at home against Germany, were unlucky to lose
this match 1:2 one year ago. Austrian's Swiss coach Marcel Koller plays
an offensively-minded aggressive game, already gained a 2:2 in Ireland
and could beat Sweden 2:1 at home recently. Ten players of his squad
earn their money at German clubs, midfielder Baumgartlinger (Mainz) will
be suspended on Friday.
